What should I prepare before adopting a guinea pig?

Short answer: adoption is a long-term commitment. Check your space, time, budget and access to an exotic-pet vet first, then ask the rehoming organisation about this guinea pig in detail.

1. Honest self-check — guinea pigs commonly live 5–8 years and need daily cleaning, feeding and company, plus a budget for food and vet visits.

2. Living space — a roomy, ventilated, solid-floored enclosure with hiding places, away from direct sun and heat, at a stable temperature.

3. Ask the rehomer — age, sex, current diet, temperament, whether neutered, and any known care or vet history. Ask a vet to confirm sex too.

4. Companions — guinea pigs are social. If you already have one, keep the newcomer separate at first and introduce them gradually.

5. The first few days — keep the same hay and diet, then adjust slowly. Watch eating, drinking, droppings and energy, and avoid frequent handling.

6. Choose a trustworthy route — government shelters, registered animal-welfare groups or transparent rehomers, with clear adoption terms.
