Why do guinea pigs "popcorn"?
Short answer: popcorning is a sign of happiness, excitement and energy — it means your guinea pig feels safe and relaxed.
1. What it looks like — sudden vertical hops and twists, like popcorn in a pan, often several in a row.
2. When it happens — floor time, fresh hay, the sound of feeding, or play with a companion.
3. More common in young pigs — juveniles popcorn more often; fewer hops in adulthood is normal.
4. How to encourage it — daily safe floor time, hideouts, fresh hay and a calm, low-stress home.
5. Not to be confused with fear — frantic running into bars with squealing is a stress response; check for noise or scares.
