How often does a guinea pig need a health check?
Short answer: once a year for adults, every six months from about 4 years old, and a baseline check within 1–2 weeks of bringing a new pig home.
1. Right clinic — choose a vet experienced with exotic (non-cat/dog) pets.
2. Typical checks — weight, teeth, coat, ears and eyes, feet, abdominal palpation and droppings.
3. Bring along — recent weight log, hay and pellet brand names, photos of droppings.
4. Travel — line the carrier with a towel and hay; avoid midday heat in summer.
5. Do not wait — lethargy, 12 hours without eating or no droppings needs a vet right away.
