Why does my guinea pig lick my hand or nibble my fingers?
Short answer: licking usually means they like the salt on your skin or are showing affection; a gentle nibble often means "put me down" or "that is enough petting".
1. Licking — salt and food scents attract them, and it is also a trusting, grooming-like behaviour.
2. A light nibble — common after long holds or when they need to toilet; return them to a safe spot.
3. A hard bite — usually fear, discomfort or food smell on your hands; wash hands and move slowly.
4. Build trust — hand-feed hay or vegetables at the same time each day.
5. Watch for change — a gentle pig that suddenly bites or resists touch in one area may be unwell; consult an exotic-pet vet.
