Everyday ear and eye care for guinea pigs
Short answer: healthy ears are clean with no odour and healthy eyes are bright with no discharge; mostly just observe, and gently wipe the outer area with a damp cloth when needed.
1. Normal eyes — guinea pigs sometimes produce a little milky fluid in the morning for grooming; this is normal.
2. Gentle wiping — for dried residue around the eye, use clean gauze with warm boiled water, wiping inside to out, one piece per eye.
3. Ears — a small amount of light brown wax is normal; clean only the visible outer ear and never push cotton buds into the canal.
4. Environment — choose low-dust hay and bedding and position hay so stalks do not poke the eyes.
5. When to see a vet — persistent tearing, redness, cloudiness or eyes that stay shut, or ears with odour, frequent scratching or a head tilt; see an exotic-pet vet promptly.
