Do guinea pigs get cold in winter? How do I keep them warm safely?
Short answer: they start to feel cold below 15°C (59°F). Aim for 18–24°C (64–75°F) in winter and avoid sudden temperature swings.
1. Extra bedding — a thicker layer or fleece liners plus a cosy, covered hideout.
2. Block drafts — keep the cage away from door and window gaps; cover three sides, leave one open for airflow.
3. Heating — a low-temperature pet heat pad under only half the floor so they can move away; keep lamps at a safe distance and cords chew-proof.
4. Hay and nutrition — cold weather burns more energy; keep hay plentiful to maintain normal appetite.
5. Warning signs — huddled and still, cold to the touch or eating less: see an exotic-pet vet promptly.
