← Guinea pig care guide

How big should a guinea pig cage be?

Short answer: at least about 0.7 m² for one, and 100 × 100 cm or more of floor space for a pair — floor area matters more than height.

1. Floor over levels — guinea pigs do not climb much; open ground lets them run.

2. Solid base — avoid wire floors that can hurt feet.

3. Essentials — one hideout per pig, hay rack, water bottle or bowl, food bowl.

4. Placement — away from AC vents, direct sun and noisy appliances; keep 18–26°C.

5. Daily floor time — an hour or more in a safe pen helps maintain natural vitality.
