How do I care for a senior guinea pig?
Short answer: guinea pigs live about 5–8 years and are considered senior from around 4–5. Regular check-ups, weekly weighing and an adapted home matter most.
1. Weigh weekly — a steady drop in weight is one of the earliest signals.
2. Vet check-ups — every six months for teeth, joints and body condition.
3. Accessible home — lower ledges and ramps, soft bedding, food and water within easy reach.
4. Weaker chewing — mix the powder with water under 40°C into a soft mash as nutritional support.
5. Quality of life — track eating, mobility, self-grooming and interest in interaction together with your vet.
6. Care for yourself too — share tasks with family and rest when you need to.
