How do I hold a guinea pig safely?
Short answer: one hand under the chest behind the front legs, the other supporting the bottom and back legs, then hold them close to your body.
1. Announce yourself — speak softly and approach slowly, never grab from above.
2. Two-hand support — never lift by the chest alone with the back half dangling.
3. Hold close — against your chest or on your lap.
4. Stay low — beginners should sit on the floor or a sofa in case of wriggling.
5. If they squirm — calmly set them down rather than squeezing.
6. Children should sit down and be supervised.
