Can guinea pigs eat apple, guava and other fruit? How much?
Short answer: as an occasional reward — once or twice a week, one or two fingernail-sized pieces. Too much sugar does not help maintain gut health.
1. Good choices — apple (seeds removed), guava (rich in vitamin C), strawberry, blueberry, kiwi.
2. Always remove — apple seeds, pits and waxy skins; wash first.
3. Portion rule — fruit stays under 5% of the daily diet; hay remains 80%+.
4. Avoid — sugary dried fruit like raisins, canned fruit and avocado.
5. Watch — if droppings become unformed after fruit, pause and reduce the portion.
