← Guinea pig care guide

How should I think about hospice care and euthanasia for an elderly or very ill guinea pig?

Short answer: it is a decision to make together with an exotic-pet vet, centred on comfort and quality of life. There is no right or wrong — only what is kindest for your pet.

1. Palliative and hospice care — comfort first under veterinary guidance: warmth, soft bedding, help with eating and cleaning.

2. Quality-of-life notes — record daily whether they can eat, move and toilet on their own and still show interest in their surroundings.

3. Talk openly with your vet about options, expectations and home care.

4. Euthanasia — when discomfort can no longer be relieved, a vet can help them pass peacefully.

5. Saying goodbye — talk as a family beforehand and keep photos and memories.

6. Look after yourself — grief is normal; friends or pet-loss support groups can help.
