← Guinea pig care guide

My guinea pig is pregnant — what should I do?

Short answer: pregnancy lasts about 59–72 days. See an exotic-pet vet early, separate her from males and give her a quiet, temperature-stable space.

1. Early vet check — females first bred after roughly 7–8 months of age face higher birthing risk and need closer monitoring.

2. Separate the male — females can conceive again right after giving birth.

3. Nutrition — alfalfa may be offered during pregnancy and nursing on your vet's advice, plus daily vitamin C-rich vegetables.

4. Environment — keep 18–24°C in a single-level cage without ledges.

5. Minimal handling in late pregnancy.

6. After birth — pups are born furred with open eyes. Labour lasting over an hour without progress, bleeding or a weak mother needs a vet immediately.
