Can a guinea pig live alone? Bonding and companionship guide

Short answer: guinea pigs are social herd animals — keep at least two when possible, and introduce new companions gradually.

1. Herd nature — with company they are more active, communicate more and experience less stress.

2. Good pairings — two of the same sex (two females bond most easily), or a neutered male with a female; unneutered pairs breed quickly.

3. Introduction steps — side-by-side cages for a few days → meet on neutral ground → provide two sets of food, water and hideouts → move in together once calm.

4. Normal settling in — chasing, mounting and rumbling establish hierarchy and usually settle within days.

5. When to separate — repeated bites drawing blood, or raised fur with constant teeth chattering; separate immediately and consult an exotic-pet vet if needed.

6. Single pigs — if you can only keep one, add daily interaction, attention and floor time.
